Each year the Halifax Jaycees sponsor a Junior Miss Pageant
for Silver Lake's senior girls. The girls are rated on scholastic
achievement, talent, originality, poise, appearance, and personality.
The winner receives six-hundred dollars in scholarships and a
chance to go on to the state and perhaps the national pageant.
This year's contestants were: Stephanie Arruda, Diane Casey,
Pamela Crudup, Karen Donnelly, Deborah Glass, Deborah Wright-
ington. Vickie Wrightington was chosen Silver Lake's Junior Miss
for 1969 with runner-up Deborah Moore and second runner-up
Deborah Glass. Diane Casey won the talent competition with a skit,
in which she parodied "Lady Bird" Johnson. Vickie sang "Love is
Blue" in French and accompanied herself on the classical guitar.

"Bam jam, bob dob it ..."
Mr. Little's temper flared up again
as the Senior Class presented The
Fighting Littles on Friday, November
22, and Saturday, November 23, un-
der the direction of Mr. Donald Ran-
dall and Mrs. Maxine Lamb.
The senior actors portrayed a fam-
ily facing the problems of "the gen-
eration gap." A very frustrated Mr.
Little worried about his daughter
Goody's wild friends, especially Ham,
her favorite. Much to his dismay he
discovered that Filmer, the son whom
he thought he knew so well, had fallen
in love with Ham's sister Antoinette.
Henriette's arrival and Goody's dating
Norman Peel provided still more
causes of anxiety for the "terrible tem-
pered Mr. Little," while Mrs. little
constantly tried to soothe her family's
outbursts.
The cast and crew enjoyed present-
ing the comedy as much as the audi-
ence enjoyed watching it. The Fight-
ing Littles proved to be a thoroughly
enjoyable experience for all.

He cares about his students. This quality makes Mr. Richard Bergeron a fine
teacher. Calm, patient, always willing to help, he never raises his voice in anger, or
degrades his students. Caring enough to give his students a chance, he trusts them as
individuals and responsible adults.
Mr. Bergeron's efforts are not confined to the classroom. For the Psychology Club,
one of his favorite projects, he arranged many lectures. Distinguished personalities
came to school at his invitation to present programs on Witchcraft, Extra Sensory
Perception, Psychiatric Social Work and Yoga. Few of us will forget David Hoy's
demonstration of ESP, or the tales of Westborough's warlock.
Mr. Bergeron established another program this year which is rewarding both to
the psychology students involved and to the school children they work with. Under
Mr. Bergeron's direction students have had the opportunity to work with emotionally
disturbed children, to give them extra individual attention arid care.
As director of the Faculty Drug Committee, Mr. Bergeron arranged programs to
inform students and their parents about drug use and abuse. One especially help-
ful program during school hours provided small group discussions with members
of Project Place, an organization which had some success in working with runaways
and drug users in Boston. In the evening and after school the guest speakers answered
questions and consulted with interested students and adults.
One measure of a person's greatness is his ability to accept and use constructive
criticism. Mr. Bergeron not only accepts criticism, he invites it. Silver Lake's former
psychology students received survey forms which included questions about their present
occupations, college backgrounds, and evaluations of their high school psychology
course. In the letter accompanying the forms, Mr. Bergeron explained that the in-
formation would help him better to prepare his students for their lives after gradua-
tion.
The class of 1969 dedicates its Torch to Mr. Richard N. Bergeron, a teacher who
possesses the most important qualities of understanding and sensitivity.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE
It is with great pride that the members of the Silver Lake School Committee take this
opportunity of extending congratulations to the graduating Class of 1969.
Your School Committee is continuing to plan the facilities which classes to follow yours
will need in the near future. Along with planning for the anticipated growth of our
member towns and the rise in school population, your Silver Lake School will have to be
ready and able to take advantage of new concepts in education. Our curriculum will
have to be able to meet the needs of a rapidly changing society.
The concept of a regional school composed of students from four sepa-
rate towns is no longer a new idea. It is by now a proven means of offering
you the choice of a broader, more diversified curriculum. In your six
years at Silver Lake, you have helped to weld the school district together
into a viable unit. Your achievements, both athletic and academic, have
been a credit to yourselves, and have brought honor to your school. For
those of us privileged to serve on the School Committee, it indeed justifies
the dozens of meetings we have had to attend.

SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
OFFICE OF THE
SUPERINTENDENT
America is in a cycle of change. Youth
is questioning the direction of this change
and asks — yes, even demands — a voice in
the decision. As you consider your posi-
tion in relation to demonstration and pro-
test, ask whether you want to be a part
of the problem — or a part of the solution.

To the SENIORS:
This has been a memorable year in
many ways. You have accepted the chal-
lenge made to you last September in our
first assembly, namely, to make this school
a better place simply because you are
here.
Your record has been one of which you
can be proud, but it is only a beginning.
What you have accomplished as a class
now becomes an individual responsibility.
You are just as obligated to make your
community a better place through your
efforts as you were to help your school
grow.
We are confident that you will not stop
now that you are leaving us, but will lend
your talents, whatever they may be, to
the numerous worthwhile endeavors
around you.
Our best wishes go to you for contin-
ued success wherever you may be.

HALL
MONITORS
At Silver Lake, as in
any large school, there are
many rules and regula-

OFFICE
AIDS
The girls who work in
the offices are selected by
faculty and office person-
nel for their reliability and
pleasing manner. Their
duties are varied and are
vital to the smooth opera-
tion of the school. It is a
requirement that these
girls maintain good
grades in their subjects.
HEALTH AIDS
Health Aids are a group of en-
thusiastic girls who assist the
school nurse by performing vari-
ous duties. These duties may en-
tail some clerical work, running
errands, and helping with physical
examinations. These aids are a
necessity because of the nurse's
ever mounting tasks.
GUIDANCE AIDS
Much of the routine clerical work of
the Guidance Department is handled by
guidance aids. These girls assist Mrs. Sher-
man and the guidance counselors during
their study periods. Some of their tasks
include calling students out of class, carry-
ing messages, and organizing clerical ma-

The Future Farm-
ers of America are very
active in both agricul-
tural and service proj-
ects. Some of the activi-
ties of this group in-
clude their annual
Spring Plant Sale, a
Christmas wreath sale,
participation in the
state F.F.A. judging
contests, and visiting
the children at the
Lakeville Children's
Hospital at Christmas
time and in the Spring.
HOME EC CLUB
Initially the Home Economics Club gave girls who were unable
to schedule Home Economics during class time an opportunity to
become familiar with the Home Economics lab. The club's prime
function is for the girls to be of service to the school and to their
families, but it has also served as a source of enjoyment.

FUTURE
NURSES
CLUB
Because of the rapid
growth of hospitals there
exists in our country today
an urgent need for qualified
nurses. The Future Nurses
Club hopes to fill the void
by preparing high school stu-
dents for nursing careers.

their duties are checking out books and arranging books and periodicals. The Stu-

ADVISORY
BOARD
The Student Advisory Council
is made up of the four class presi-
dents, the President of the Student
Council, the President of the Key
Club, and the Principal of Silver
Lake, Mr. Stanton. The purpose
of the council is to provide a com-
munications link between students
and administration. To the coun-
cil, students may bring griev-
ances; from the council, the Prin-
cipal may obtain views on admin-
istrative policies.
STUDENT
COUNCIL
The Student Council is our
form of student government
at Silver Lake. Each class
elects representatives to the
council which meets every
Monday morning.

of science may join the Science
Club. Meetings, which are held
monthly, include talks by guest
speakers. The club also takes field
trips under the supervision of its
advisor, Mrs. McCulloch.

complicated game, requiring considerable
knowledge and skill. The Chess Club serves to
acquaint students with the game and to help
them to gradually progress to a high level of
proficiency.
GYM
LEADERS
Gym leaders give up
their free periods to lead
gym classes and other-
wise help out Mr. Mon-
tosi or Miss Annis. Their
help is very much appre-
ciated by the two instruc-
tors.
FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS
The Future Business Leaders of America is an active organization comprised of business students
who desire to further their knowledge of the business world. It is the aim of the organization to
develop competent and aggressive business leadership. To obtain this goal, F.B.L.A. seeks to instill the
qualities of character, citizenship, scholarship, patriotism, and school loyalty in the members. Meetings
are held twice a month and exchange meetings are held in conjunction with the Whitman-Hanson
chapter of F.B.L.A. The club also sponsors assemblies and field trips.
DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION

ANNOUNCING STAFF
The Announcing Staff is a group of students who aid the school by making announcements over
the public address system during homeroom period. In an effort to make the morning announcements
more enjoyable the Announcing Staff introduced a policy of presenting "creative announcements."
Members of the staff now not only read announcements, but write advertisements for dances and
other functions.
AUDIO
VISUAL
CLUB
Audio-visual aides assist in the operating
of projectors and other equipment during
their study periods. Good experience is
gained by learning to run, repair and
deliver audio-visual equipment.
CHORUS
All students with a 7th Period
study may join the school chorus.
Practice sessions are held during
that period. The results of these
sessions are heard in the Christ-
mas and Spring Concert.

The Dramatics Club strives
to instill in its members the
